Anonymous asked:
Best piece of advice to anyone recovering from an eating disorder?
j-ir:
I can’t choose one so I thought of a few.
- You’re going to want to lose the weight you have gained once restored/restoring. Don’t. If you lose Xkgs, you’re just going to have to gain them right back. Once is hard enough, right?
- Keep going, even when you think you can’t.
- Remember that you can’t trust your own eyes. You do not accurately know how you look, so every time you panic over your appearance remember that your eyes are playing tricks on you. It’ll take a while for you to properly able to see yourself, but it will happen, trust me.
- Write/draw/throw things/talk/cry/mosaic (worked for me) until your feelings aren’t bottled up anymore. You have to get them out in a way that doesn’t harm you.
- Ask yourself how many times has your psych/dietician/loved ones caused you to come close to death, and compare that w how many times/how badly does your disorder want you dead? Who are you going to trust w your life?
- Don’t lie to yourself. You know what you’re really doing (you always have).
- Be honest. Always be honest. It’s the thing your disorder will hate the most, but it’s the ultimate recovery tool.
- (If you’re weight restoring) The weight will redistribute. Be patient.
- Let yourself feel. You’ve been numbing for so long that you’ll freak the fuck out when you feel mad and upset and torn up, but it’s healthy to hurt and you have to relearn that.
- Probably one of the most powerful statements someone ever told me was, “do the exact opposite of what your eating disorder tells/is telling you to do”. It helped me so much.
- Think of how much that bitch in your head has hurt you. Think of all the pain she’s caused. Piss her off. Make her fucking MAD. Use your anger as fuel.
- And trust yourself, your team and your body. It/they know what it’s/they’re doing.
Sometimes, recovery/weight restoration isn’t laying off the cardio and falling in love with lifting. Sometimes, it’s not all about whole grains and protein powder. Sometimes, it’s not about #gains or the booty or bulging biceps. Sometimes, it’s about sitting around on exercise restriction eating a balanced diet, and even an occasional milkshake. Sometimes, it’s gaining fat, especially around your belly, because that’s what your body needs to heal the damage you have done to it. It’s not always aesthetically pleasing. It’s cellulite and stretch marks and a belly pouch and a body you don’t even recognize as your own. And it’s okay. You are healing. You are a beautiful recovery warrior, stretch marks and all.

things to do more often
- hide little positivity notes in pockets of bags, pants, or jackets you won’t use for a while
- take (actual) candids of your friends when they’re happy. show them to them later
- send random snail mail full of goodies to your far away friends
- read for pleasure
- hug your friends and family just because! bonus points if you tell them you love them and/or why– that’s very important to hear once in a while
- add a little cinnamon to your coffee or toast
- use those beauty products you’ve been “saving”
- send anonymous asks of positivity to people on tumblr– who doesn’t love those omg
- collect little day to day things that make you happy and make a little page of positive vibes
- buy flowers for yourself
- journal about your happiest moments. read them when you’re feeling down
